Dog Ear Infection – Things to Know

Dog ear infection refers to the infection of the outer parts of the ear canal. This condition is called otitis externa and is caused by several factors. In addition, the severity and the frequency of the infection depend on the breed. The dog ear infection is common in breeds with large external ears and hairy ears. There are three types of ear infections, known formally as otitis externa, otitis media, and otitis interna with otitis externa being the most common of the three. In this piece, we introduce you to the most common ear infections, the causes, and how to deal with them.

Causes of Ear Infections in Dogs

Ear infections in dogs are caused by several factors some of which are tied to the anatomy of the dog's ear or external factors. Most ear infections are typically caused by bacteria, yeast, or a combination of both. The anatomy of the dog’s ear plays a key role in the development of these diseases since it is L shaped, hence tends to hold in more fluid that predisposes it to infection. Other causes of ear infection include wax buildup, an injury to the ear canal that causes an open wound prone to bacterial attack, endocrine disorders like thyroid disease, and moisture which creates a prime growing environment for bacteria and yeast. Foreign bodies that cause injury are also a common cause.

Symptoms of Dog Ear Infections

Dog ear infections are very painful and the dog will not be able to hide the pain. Many dogs will express the pain by shaking their head and scratching their ears trying to relieve the discomfort. Dogs may also become inactive and isolated as they deal with the pain. In addition, the appearance of the ears changes from the normal appearance to red coupled with a swelling of the ear canal. A dark discharge may also be observed from the ears with a bad-smelling odor. In chronic cases, the ears may appear crusty or thickened and the ear canals often become narrowed thanks to excessive inflammation.

Dog Ear Infections Treatment

Most ear infections are easy to treat and disappear within the first few days of treatment. Outer infections are also easier to treat than inner infections. cleaning and ear drops are the most common treatment methods. More severe cases require sophisticated treatment methods by the vet.

Conclusion

Ear infections are common and need to be addressed immediately before they develop to be more severe. Remember, your dog cannot tell you exactly what is bothering her, so be on the look out for symptoms.
